Photography 9/17/09

This picture is of an Afghan girl from 1984, the reason I chose this picture is to show that even though her culture is very different from ours and their customs as well, she looks like any other girl in America that you could see walking down the street or through the halls of school. The women is Afighanistan are very modest, there are laws forbidding them to show any part of their body except their eyes (obviously to see), but also they are to walk behind the men and keep their heads down. So freedom is not something many of them think about let alone try to protest for. I love this picture not only for the quality of the photo but also you can tell just by looking at her that there is a whole other life that she lives filled with tourture, danger, and fear. The girl in the picture was around 12 when it was taken and the photographers were unable to find out her name until 1992. Her picture made the cover of National Geographic the next year (1985). This photo was taken by Steve McCurry.
This photo to the left, to me, truly explains the suffrage and stress that all americans felt during the Great Depression. The title of the picture, "Migrant mother" can self-describe the kind of treatment her and others felt during this time where jobs were scarce for the average american let alone a migrant coming from another country with nothing but dreams. The mother in this picture depicts a look of unhappiness most likely because she has no clue how she will feed, clothe or take care of her children. Time were rough back then and for an imigrant coming to this new country it was harder. This photo was taken by Dorothea Lange.
